Temporal trends in anthropogenic marine macro-debris and micro-debris accumulation on the California Channel Islands

چکیده

Accumulation of anthropogenic marine debris on shorelines is an issue global concern, even impacting areas that are remote, uninhabited, or have protected area status. On islands in Southern California, USA, within the boundaries a National Park and Marine Sanctuary, we collected macro-debris beaches assessed micro-debris beach sediment seasonally between 2016-2020. Macro-debris (>5mm) was from seven two California Channel Islands sites mainland. We both number items total mass debris. Composition dominated by plastics, particularly fragmented hard foamed plastics food packaging. A substantial quantity lost discarded fishing gear collected, with most fishery-related found at historically highest spiny lobster effort. The initial density ranged 0.01-0.13 m -2 0.01-0.02 kg . Mean accumulation rates were strongly site-dependent 0.03-0.34 yr -1 0.01-0.05 , tended to be fall winter months. Anthropogenic (<5mm) all sites. Micro-debris had no statistically significant relationship items, plastic items. There were, however, relationships mass. compared rate during season (October-March) for years 2017 2020. differed significantly among sites, apparent declines over time, likely reflecting declining effort fishery trap-limit regulations implemented 2017-2018 season. Our assessment Island has provided detailed information types patterns accumulation. Unfortunately, remoteness direct human impact protected-area status does not protect these habitats against onslaught litter. Assessments critical identify sources, inform policy support efforts reduce litter vital coastal ecosystems.

Exceptional and rapid accumulation of anthropogenic debris on one of the world's most remote and pristine islands.

In just over half a century plastic products have revolutionized human society and have infiltrated terrestrial and marine environments in every corner of the globe. The hazard plastic debris poses to biodiversity is well established, but mitigation and planning are often hampered by a lack of quantitative data on accumulation patterns. Here we document the amount of debris and rate of accumula...

Estimates of Marine Debris Accumulation on Beaches Are Strongly Affected by the Temporal Scale of Sampling

Marine debris is a global issue with impacts on marine organisms, ecological processes, aesthetics and economies. Consequently, there is increasing interest in quantifying the scale of the problem. Accumulation rates of debris on beaches have been advocated as a useful proxy for at-sea debris loads. However, here we show that past studies may have vastly underestimated the quantity of available...

Assessing marine debris in deep seafloor habitats off California.

Marine debris is a global concern that pollutes the world's oceans, including deep benthic habitats where little is known about the extent of the problem. We provide the first quantitative assessment of debris on the seafloor (20-365 m depth) in submarine canyons and the continental shelf off California, using the Delta submersible. Fishing activities were the most common contributors of debris...

The impact of debris on marine life.

Marine debris is listed among the major perceived threats to biodiversity, and is cause for particular concern due to its abundance, durability and persistence in the marine environment. An extensive literature search reviewed the current state of knowledge on the effects of marine debris on marine organisms. 340 original publications reported encounters between organisms and marine debris and ...
